"Is The Is Are," the highly anticipated second album from Brooklyn's DIIV, is the result of several years and a lot of personal setbacks in the life of its creator, Zachary Cole Smith. Recorded and mixed at various locations in Brooklyn, the album combines everything known and loved about DIIV with additional nuances and expansive depth, revealing things we didn't previously know. "Is The Is Are" is a double album featuring 17 songs that make a statement and will resonate with its audience much like albums such as "Bad Moon Rising" and "Tago Mago," which struck Smith's heart.
Expanding upon and deepening the musical ideas initially expressed on the critically acclaimed "Oshin" in 2012, "Is The Is Are" is rich in textures, lyrical themes, and moods. The world here is more diverse than "Oshin," with different parameters and ideals. Smith's vocals are more prominent, riding on the crest of shimmering guitars and melodic bass. Dark and brutally honest, the new songs appear dynamic, loud, soft, and sorrowful.
