Although "Suffer" only runs for 26 minutes, Fat Mike, singer and bassist of NOFX, described it as "the album that changed everything" in terms of the American punk revival of the 1990s.

In fact, the band’s third full-length album, released in 1988, not only marked Bad Religion's international breakthrough in the scene, but also laid the foundation for the massive success of the Epitaph label, which went on to sign exactly those bands—The Offspring, NOFX, Rancid, and Pennywise—that would make waves in the '90s with melodic hardcore, pop punk, and skate punk.

At the time, "Suffer" offered something completely new: fast yet very melodic songs with multi-part vocals and background harmonies, as well as abrupt rhythm changes. Added to this was Greg Graffin’s clear singing style, marked by precise enunciation and meter, and intellectually inspired lyrics.

Bad Religion recorded the 15 tracks of "Suffer" in their original lineup —
Greg Graffin (vocals), Brett Gurewitz (guitar), Greg Hetson (guitar), Jay Bentley (bass), and Pete Finestone (drums) — in April 1988 at Westbeach Recorders in Hollywood.
