After a nice but fairly unremarkable pop-punk debut, Brand New made their big breakthrough in the U.S. four years ago with the much more emo-driven Déjà Entendu, putting them on the same level as Taking Back Sunday.

For their third album—and their major-label debut—the band took their time, even scrapping an almost finished version (except for two songs) after early copies leaked online. And once again, Brand New has made a massive leap in their musical evolution.

With The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, the band moves beyond their emo-pop roots, embracing epic guitar work, slow-burning tension, atmospheric soundscapes, and Jesse Lacey’s unmistakably fragile, ever-searching vocals. This record showcases a more mature, complex, and open-minded version of Brand New, incorporating a wider range of influences.

It’s no surprise they teamed up with producer Rich Costey, known for his work with The Mars Volta, Muse, and Franz Ferdinand. Here’s hoping longtime fans appreciate this artistic progression—because this album is nothing short of a masterpiece.
