The acoustic album sounds euphoric, light, and positive. Despite all the wooden melancholy, the Donots allow themselves to completely reimagine each song — with a different vibe, new rhythms, alternative melodies — yet always with enough grip and drive. Even fast-paced tracks like the live classic “Dead Man Walking” or the secret summer hit “Problem kein Problem” burst through the wooden table on the acoustic album.
But it’s not just the new arrangements that bring a fresh breeze through the band’s own Heavy Kranich Studio, where the songs were rethought and recorded in various sessions. The Donots also invited old friends and longtime companions to contribute to various goosebump moments.
For example, the Donots hit “Stop The Clocks” has become a duet with Campino from Die Toten Hosen, while Kuddel von Holst (also from Die Toten Hosen) played a beautiful guitar solo on the first new English-language song in 13 years. Of course, Frank Turner couldn’t be left out of the new version of “So Long,” and Chuck Ragan from Hot Water Music and Matt Hensley from Flogging Molly lend their signature grit and accordion skills. Shitney Beers opens “Keiner kommt hier lebend raus” with her wonderful shoegaze-style vocals.
