“Because we humans can be switched on and off.” With the oppressive “43,” FJORT from Aachen announce the arrival of their fifth album, “belle époque”. The first minute leads us in a ballad-like manner into the unimaginably dehumanized era of German history and draws a warning arc into our present day. Only then does the trio play the strongest card in their hand: a musical discharge that lends weight to what we have just heard.

When, in the following verse, “we have murdered, pillaged, violated, strangled – we are capable of this” is screamed with 98dC distortion and we are repeatedly urged toward self-reflection in the face of this horror, it becomes clear: “belle époque” is the band’s most powerful album in terms of language to date.

“We live in swastika times,” FJORT conclude at the end, making it unmistakably clear how close we stand to repeating what once was. On a musical level, FJORT remain their own benchmark: compositions like theatrical plays, emotionally condensed, capable of instilling fear and offering release at the same time.
