The Purple Bird was recorded in Nashville with producer David “Ferg” Ferguson and an ensemble of top-notch session musicians. It could be described as “a true Nashville record,” consisting of songs crafted primarily at Ferg’s kitchen table.

On The Purple Bird, Bonnie "Prince" Billy is working with a producer for only the second time in his illustrious career. His relationship with Ferg dates back over two decades to the sessions for Johnny Cash's American III album with Rick Rubin, where Ferg served as engineer, and Cash recorded a cover of BPB's track "I See A Darkness." Over the years, the two have collaborated on numerous projects, but none as intensively as The Purple Bird.

So, what does “a true Nashville record” mean for the enigmatic Bonnie “Prince” Billy? At the start of the sessions, Ferg told Oldham, “I don’t want a country record, just do your thing, Will.” And indeed, Oldham and Ferg, along with their fellow musicians, have created an impressive album, marking a new peak in the extensive catalog of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.
