"Magnificent Fall" — the new rarities compilation from German indie icons The Notwist — gathers some of the band’s most special and adventurous moments from across their rich and shape-shifting history.
Throughout their career, The Notwist have quietly slipped stunning songs and thrilling remixes onto split singles, EPs, and other less conventional formats. Now thoughtfully curated into one flowing, cohesive listening experience, these 13 tracks form a kind of “shadow narrative”—an alternative lens through which to view the band’s evolution and creative breadth.
Crucially, Magnificent Fall avoids a chronological tracklist. Instead, it jumps freely across eras and incarnations of the band, led by brothers Markus and Micha Acher. This approach feels right: the compilation is driven by two core impulses—to move forward without repeating the past, and to build upon the group’s uniquely expressive musical language.
Take for instance the graceful instrumental “Avalanche” from 2020’s Ship, which follows effortlessly from the bittersweet glitch-pop of “Blank Air”, originally released in 2010 on a split with former member Martin Gretschmann’s project, Console. Different eras, different lineups, but shared emotional and sonic ground.
Musically, Magnificent Fall travels wide terrain—abstract hip-hop, chamber pop, folky minimalism, indietronica, and loose, exploratory improvisation. Several previously unreleased tracks also appear, further enriching this deep dive into the band’s archives.
At the core of it all is what has always made The Notwist so distinct: the subtle, poetic sensibility of the Acher brothers—their ability to move through the world thoughtfully, inviting others into their creative orbit with openness and care.
Looking back without falling into nostalgia, Magnificent Fall is a beautifully assembled starting point for The Notwist’s reissue series with Morr Music, which includes a forthcoming box set and reissues of their eight albums, tracing three and a half decades of music and community-building.
Looking back to move forward? Seems like the perfect idea.
