It’s the band’s first album in five years since Obsidian (2020), produced by guitarist Gregor Mackintosh and mixed/mastered by Lawrence Mackrory. Ascension stands as a powerful testament to the band’s relevance and longevity across a career spanning more than 35 years—defined by their signature blend of gothic, death, and doom metal that has captivated fans from the very beginning.
The cover of Ascension fittingly features the painting The Court of Death (1870–1902) by renowned British artist George Frederic Watts, housed in London’s Tate Gallery. The image portrays Death as a throne-seated angel, flanked by the allegories of Silence and Mystery, who guard the rising sun and the Star of Hope. A warrior lays down his sword, a duke his crown—worldly power holds no protection from death. This dark, prophetic vision perfectly mirrors the sonic gloom of Ascension, where mournful verses collide with ominous, crushing riffs.
Vocalist Nick Holmes says about the album:
“Ascension is a surge of liquid misery—a powerful, painful walk through a wicked world full of glorious triumphs and pitiful tragedies.”
