Runnner’s second album, A Welcome Kind of Weakness, was born out of a simultaneous rupture—both physical and emotional—for songwriter Noah Weinman. During the months he spent bedridden, recovering from a torn Achilles tendon and the emotional fallout of a breakup, he wrote the album’s 11 tracks—his strongest work to date, fully embracing the vulnerability hinted at in the title.
But at the same time, these songs are Runnner’s most present, defiant, and self-assured yet—a testament to the kind of quiet resolve that can emerge from graceful surrender.
Longtime fans of Weinman have likely fallen for his unmistakable brand of indie rock—crafted almost entirely in bedrooms and home studios—where his poignant, self-aware lyrics float over banjos, guitars, and echoing brass, building toward cathartic peaks. But A Welcome Kind of Weakness marks the first time Weinman steps fully into high fidelity.
It’s Runnner’s first proper studio album, drawing inspiration from the larger-than-life rock of the early 2000s that Weinman grew up on—bands like Coldplay, Radiohead, and Snow Patrol—marked by raw vocal presence, shimmering guitar riffs, and an astral wash of synths. This is rock music in its most delicious form—music that gave Weinman something to look forward to when he was finally able to play live again.
Still, for all its sonic highs, A Welcome Kind of Weakness also sees Weinman reckoning—gracefully—with the questions that arise from moments of physical and emotional collapse. It takes a certain kind of courage to sit long enough in the murky middle to write about it. And in his willingness to bear witness to that transitional space, Weinman seems to offer comfort:
You may think you’ll never run again—but in time, maybe you will.
