“I’ve been away for so long,” Jason Beebout sings several times in the opener “80 West,” and you immediately feel inclined to agree. SAMIAM have once again stayed away from the studio for far too long—their last album, Whatever’s Got You Down, came out back in 2006.

For everyone who struggled to warm up to that record because of its raw sound, it’s worth saying that with Trips, SAMIAM have returned—sonically as well—to their old strengths and to the sound that has long been typical for them.

From the very first notes, you’re reminded of the ’90s, before the warm, bittersweet, and poppy tones (and all of that is meant in the best possible way) completely pull you in and leave you after just under 40 minutes with a contented “ah, yes…”
