sunn O))) and Sub Pop are launching this exciting partnership with three massive monoliths of low-end drone, released just in time for the heavy gloom of winter in the form of a maxi-single.
The 12" maxi-single, featuring "Eternity's Pillars" on Side A and "Raise the Chalice" and "Reverential" on Side B, marks sunn O)))'s first release on Sub Pop. It consists of three brand-new tracks, written and performed by the legendary duo Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson, and co-produced by sunn O))) and Brad Wood.
Brad Wood recorded the material in 2025 at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville and Sea Grass in Los Angeles. These tracks are the first official studio recordings by sunn O))) featuring only the original core duo, using heavily saturated electric guitars and synthesizers.
sunn O))) devoted extreme attention and care to every step and aspect of the recording—every tone and level of saturation, every gain stage and speaker, every arrangement and harmony. The forests of the Pacific Northwest served as the guiding image.
"Eternity's Pillars" is named after a mid-1980s TV show created and hosted by jazz visionary and spiritual guru Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, which focused on her unwavering belief in music's ability to achieve spiritual transcendence.
"Raise the Chalice" is named after a rallying cry frequently used in the mid-1990s by Northwest hardcore legend Ron Guardipee.
"Reverential" pays tribute to those who came before us carrying the heaviest burdens—honoring and praising them loudly, using music and art as tools for a call-and-response (antiphon).
The album cover features the duo in the forests northeast of Seattle, photographed by Charles Peterson.
