For four years now, the three slackers Reinhold Emerson, Kevin Kuhn and Thomas Zehnle have been celebrating a harsh, wobbly sound between garage rock, lo-fi punk and psychedelia, which some may only know from obscure compilations of past decades, if at all. After “Birthday Songs For Paul” (originally released on cassette in 2014, later also on record), the second Wolf Mountains album “Superheavvy” is now being released via This Charming Man Records. The strong affinity for catchy pop hooks penetrates even more consistently than with the first album under the noisy facade of “Superheavvy”. The aggressiveness and confused playfulness are always met with sappy melodies. Carefree attitude intersects with gloom and sweet melancholy, the feeling of the last weekend of the very last summer vacation. The shedding of innocence and naivety. A “coming-of-age” soundtrack. There are cross-references to 60s beat groups, 80s college rock and 90s slacker pop here and there, but who wants to stick to genres? Whether that's garage rock or just 'pretty cool pop music' is up to someone else to decide.
