The experimental Berlin trio ZAHN returns with its most electrifying work to date. “Purpur” is a lavish fusion of heaviness, electronics, and hallucinatory colors. Monolithic grooves meet synthetic shimmer. The album radiates tension and danger, pulsing with depth and density. Known for their intense, propulsive sound that reflects the relentless march of a world on the brink, ZAHN—Chris Breuer, Nic Stockmann, and Felix Gebhard—push their sonic exploration further with a record that’s both more electronic and more rocking than their acclaimed predecessors. “Purpur” draws inspiration from the album’s vivid cover—a burst of grapes and berries that reflects its lush, colorful sound. The record blends powerful genres into something fresh and electrifying: heavy foundations collide with rich electronic textures, creating layers of color, complexity, and a hint of hallucinatory sweetness.
Once again recorded in Gyhum with engineer Peter Voigtmann (ex-The Ocean, Death By Gong, Heads.), “Purpur” follows the band’s earlier work but also marks a bold leap forward. Guest contributions by Fabian Bremer (Radare, AUA) and Kjetil Nernes (Årabrot) deepen the sense of unrest and fascination on the album, while Magnus Lindberg (Cult of Luna), with his mixing and mastering, gives the record the depth of an underground pulse—crisp, heavy, and alive with microscopic detail. Where “Adria” offered a vibrant escape through krautrock, dark jazz, noise rock, and post-punk, “Purpur” draws listeners into a denser, more complex and tightly woven sonic landscape. The band’s third album is a heady whirl of synthetic pulse and physical weight—a record that feels more fermented than composed.
